Sabut Urad Dal

Sabut Urad Dal | Maa ki Dal | Kali Dal | Black Gram Dal - Is simple dal recipe done with whole (black) urad dal. It taste different from Dal Makhani due to the process and spices used for it. This is famous Punjabi recipe. Sabut dal goes well with rice, roti, pulka, Naan. Dal is most common recipe in North India and it is a must.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup Urad dal (wash and soaked overnight)
  • 1 Onion sliced
  • 1 tsp Garlic paste
  • 1/2 tsp Ginger paste
  • 1 green chili
  • 1 tomato chopped
  • 1/2 tsp Turmeric powder
  • 1 tbsp Coriander powder
  • 1/2 tsp Cumin powder
  • 3/4 tsp Garam masala
  • salt to taste
  • 1 tbsp coriander leaves

For Tempering

  • 1 inch Cinnamon
  • 1 bay leaf
  • 1 Cardamom
  • 1 Star spice
  • 2 tbsp Oil
  • 1 tsp Cumin seeds

Instructions

  • Heat oil. Add Cinnamon, Bayleaf, Cardamom, Star spice. Add Cumin seeds. let it crackle. Add onion and garlic, Ginger paste. Fry for a min. Add tomatoes fry for another min
  • Add turmeric powder, coriander powder, garam masala, roasted cumin powder & required salt. Fry for a min. Add water. Let it boil
  • Add soaked urad dal and required water. adjust Salt. Pressure cook for 8-10 whistles
  • Switch it off. Let it cool down. Open the lid. Mash the dal with potato masher. Heat again add coriander leaves.
  • It is ready to be served!
