Kara Kolukattai – Savoury version of Kozhukattai recipe – Rice flour dumplings with lentil – GANESH CHATURTHI RECIPES | VINAYAKA CHAVITHI RECIPES

I love Kara kolukattai. I am more of spicy food person. Whenever my mum does kolukattai she will do special few pieces of kara kolukattai for me.. I do this version sometime when we make idiyappam as I use idiyappam flour for making kolukattai. This is a less calorie version


Ingredients For stuffing:
Moong Dhal – 1 Cup
Green chillies – 1 1/2 teaspoon (finely chopped) Adjust to your spice level
Turmeric powder – 1/4 teaspoon
Mustard Seeds -1/4 teaspoon
Urad dhal –  1 teaspoon
Asafoetida a pinch
Salt per taste
Lemon juice – 2 teaspoon
Grated coconut – 1 tablespoon
Coriander leaves – 1 tablespoon
Oil  – 2 teaspoon


Method:


Wash and cook the dhal (3/4 cooked). Drain the water.

Heat the kada and add oil. When oil is hot add mustard seeds, when it start to pop add urad dhal, asafoetida, green chillies and fry till dhals are brown. Add cooked moong dhal and fry till it is completely dried up. Add coconut and coriander leaves. Mix it well. Switch it off
Add lemon juice and mix it well. keep it aside



Ingredients for Outer skin of Kolukattai:


Idiyappam Flour – 1 Cup
Salt per taste
Water to make it to smooth dough (1- 1 1/2 cup)
Oil – 3-5 teaspoon

Method:


Boil water well, add salt and oil to it.Add rice flour and handful of maida to boiling water. reduce the flame. Mix well without any lumps (use a spoon). Switch it off and leave it for 3-5 mins.Make sure the dough is soft dough. Use the wet towel to cover the dough.

Apply oil on plastic sheet. Take a lemon size ball and spread it on oiled plastic sheet with your hand

Put 1-2 teaspoon of stuffing paste (depends on the size of the outerskin u made). Fold the outerskin 

Steam cook it in idli cooker or steamer (will take about 10-12 mins of steaming)
