Sweet Kozhukattai / kolukattai / sweet dumplings recipe – FOR VINAYAKAR CHATURTI / VARALAKSHMI POOJA / VARALAKSHMI Nombu

Sweet Kozhukattai or Mothagam is a delicious sweet & a favorite for Lord Ganesh. It is a must have dish prepared for Ganesh Chaturthi. I have tasted similar dish in Chinese cuisine also (dumplings). With same outer cover we can do numerous variation in shapes and stuffing. In this I have given it for Chana (bengal gram dhal) stuffing. Even though it has lot of steps it is all worth it in the end. Try it out!

Ingredients:

For Outer Covering:

Rice Flour – 1.5 Cups
Maida – 1 tablespoon
Water – 1 1/2 Cups
Salt a pinch

For Stuffing:

Channa Dhal / Bengal Gram dhal – 3/4 cup
Coconut – 3 tbsp
Grated Jaggery – 1 cup
Cardamom powder – a pinch

Method:

Boil 1 1/2 cup of water, teaspoon of oil with Salt. Reduce the flame and add the flours and mix well with spoon. Switch off the flame and leave it for 3-5 mins. Apply oil on your hand and mix the dough well.

Make them in to a soft dough (Adjust water accordingly. The dough should be like smooth chapathi dough). ( I have done the flour in 2 batches). Cover it with wet cloth till you need it

Cook the Channa / Bengal Gram Dhal. It should hold the shape but when u press it you should be able to mash it. If using pressure cooker pressure cook it till one whistle. Drain the water (u can use this water in sambar or rasam). Keep it aside.

Once it cool down grind it in Blender with grated coconut, grated jaggery and Cardamom powder till it is fully mixed. Take small amount and roll it into small ball and keep it aside

Grease ur hands with oil.Make lemon sized rice dough small balls and flatten them as thin as possible like a small cup.Now keep the stuffing ball and keep in middle of the cup as shown below.Pull around the edges and bring it to center over the top of the filling. Bring it together to form the modak shape. Now follow the procedure for the remaining then arrange it in a idly plate and steam it for 10-15mins.After 10-12 mins check if the kozhukottais are done.

Enjoy the Modak or sweet kolukattai
