My kids love to eat snacks with rice. They need something crunchy to go with meal during lunch time. So If I can make something light (low in calorie or carb) I always for it. I do this Aval mixture or kara pori very often. Murukku is one of their favourite too. My husband also prefer mixture time because of the variety of ingredients in it.
Ingredients
Phoa/Aval – 3 cups (thin variety or ketti aval)
Oil – 2 tablespoons
Roasted gram dal / Pottukadalai- 2 tablespoons
Peanuts / Verkadalai / Ground nuts – 1/4 cups
Mustard seeds – 1/2 teaspoon
Curry leaves – 20-25 leaves
Dry red chillies – 5 nos (break into 2 or 3)Asafoetida – 1 big pinch
Almond – 2 tablespoons
Cashew nuts – 2 tablespoons
Turmeric powder – 1/2 teaspoon
Salt – to taste
Sugar – 1/2 teaspoon
Keep all the ingredients handy as you need to add those in quick succession
Method:
Remove the impurties from aval/phoa and keep it asideDry roast all the nuts and keep it aside. Since I have used baked almond and cashew I just fried peanuts. No need to remove the skin of peanut. Keep it aside
Heat the kada and add oil. Add mustard seeds. When it pops add curry leaves and asafoetida. Fry till curry leaves are crispy. Add red chillies and roasted gram. Fry till the dhal is slight brown color.
Add all the nuts and fry for another 2 mins (make sure u stir it properly). Add salt, turmeric and sugar. Mix well. Add poha / aval and mix well. Fry till Aval is very crispy and done.
Let it cool down and store it in air tight container

I make same but adding roasted papad in it, gives nice crunch too. this way yummy too.
