Tomato chutney with Garlic and small onion (Shallots) – Simple Side dish for Dosa, Idli, Upma and adai

I love to try different chutneys esp if it is for my lunch box then all the spicy ones. This is one of the go to Chutney for my lunch box as it goes well with all the idlies, dosa, upma or even roties. So I will always have some spicy chutneys / vegetable based chutneys all the time in my fridges. Trust me this really helps if didn’t plan well or if you are so busy with work
Ingredients


Shallots / Small onion / Sambar onion – 10
Garlic – 7 pods
Tomatoes – 2 + 1 (chopped finely. Keep the 1 tomatoes separately)
Red chillies – 5-9 (adjust based on your spice level or chillies spice level)
Salt to taste
Oil – 1 tablespoon + 1 teaspoon
Mustard seeds – 1/4 teaspoon
Curry leaves – 10
Urad dhal – 1 teaspoon
Bengal gram dhal / Chana dhal – 1 teaspoon



Method:
Heat a tablespoon of oil in a pan and when it is hot add garlic, onion and red chillies. Fry till they are all cooked. Add chopped tomatoes equivalent of 2. And required salt. Fry till mushy. Switch it off. Let it cool down. When it is cool down grind to smooth paste with required salt

Heat the reminder of oil in a pan. When it is hot add mustard seeds and let it pop. Add the urad dhal and chana dhal. Fry till they are brown in color. Add Curry leaves and reminder of tomatoes ( 1) and fry till they are mushy. Add grinded paste. And let it boil. Switch it off

Serve fresh with your favourite dish

    Love the chutney and I liked your idea of using the tomatoes two ways. I like adding a little fenugreek seeds to my version.
