Puli Aval (Poha in Tamarind)

Normally Aval is something I do it during Weekend breakfast. But these days if I have protein rich vegetables I do it for weekday lunch also. It is fast and easy to do. It is good for the lunch box. I love anything with tamarind Aval is light food. before marriage my mum used to do it as snack between meals.. Now days this has become as meal! You can really make it as wholesome meal with proper side dish which is high protein. 


Ingredients:


1 cups of aval / poha / flattened rice (I have used brown Aval)

1/2 cup tamarind extract 
2 tablespoon of sesame / gingelly oil 
1 tablespoon of Bengal Gram Dhal

1/4 teaspoon Mustard seeds

1 teaspoon of urad dhal

A generous pinch of hing / asafoetida 
A few curry leaves 
2 of green chillies (split into 2)

1/4 teaspoon red chilli powder

2 Tablespoon of Onion

1/4 Turmeric powder

Salt to taste 


Method:

1. Rinse the aval once in cold water and mix well with the tamarind extract,Turmeric powder and chilli powder for 30 mins. 

2. Heat oil and add the mustard seeds, when it started to spluter add dhals. Fry till it is brown, Add curry leaves, asafoetia and chillies Fry for 10 sec. 



3. Add Onion and fry for till it is trasculent


4. Add the soaked aval and Salt. Mix well and leave it till it is cooked. Remove from fire.
