Kollu (horse gram) Rasam / Soup

I am big fan of Kollu (Horse gram ) from childhood. My mum used to do Kollu Kanji (porridge). However after learning the goodness of it I started do different dishes with it. I swear by its benefits. It really helped me. Lucky me my kids like it also.. When the have slight cold or fever first thing they ask for Horse gram Porridge.  I love to have it as soup



Ingredients:


Kollu (Horse Gram) – 2 tablespoon
Tamarind – Gooseberry size
Salt – 1 1/2 tsp or to taste
Garlic – 2
Asafoetida – 1 small piece or if using powder 1/2 tsp
Red Chilli – 3 (or to taste)
Black pepper – 10
Cumin seeds – 1 teaspoon
Urad Dhal – 1/4 teaspoon
Coriander seeds – 1/2 teaspoon
Bengal gram Dhal – 1/4 teaspoon
Curry leaves – 1 string
Oil – 1 teaspoon
Mustard seeds – 1 tsp

Chopped Coriander Leaves (cilantro) – 2 table spoons



Method:


Soak tamarind in warm water for a while and once soaked squeeze the juice thoroughly and filter and keep it.
Dry roast the horse gram till it is well roasted, watch carefully as it will burn out very quickly.
Remove the horse gram
Dry Coriander seeds, roast Black Pepper, Cumin seeds, Garlic, Urad Dhal, Bengal Gram Dhal, 2 Red Chillies
Pressure cook dry roasted ingredients and horse gram dhal with enough water
Now heat 1 teaspoon oil and add mustard seeds when it start splutter add curry leaves and 1 red chilli
Add the tamarind juice, salt, asafoetida 
Mix the cooked horse gram and the roasted pepper, jeera, red chilly,curry leaves and grind into a fine paste and add it to boiling mixture.
If the mixture is thick add little more water and boil it for another 5 minutes till all the spices are well mixed.
Garnish with 
Coriander Leaves and serve.
