Idli Podi – My most favorite side dish for idli /dosa. However, till this year I never did at home all the time I get it from my mum or MIL. Since the rest of my family is not a big fan It uses to last 2-3 months. With my current job, I used to visit India every qtr. So I used to get a continuous supply. Coronavirus has changed everything. I almost run out of all the powder, Tamarind from our own field etc.. There is always the first time and this also created an opportunity to create the most waited for a blog post! I got this recipe from my mum. Once done she wanted me to show how it turned out. After showing to her she recommends me to pulse again as my initial version of powder is more coarse. My mum deep fries Channa dal but I didn’t have the vessel which is used in deep frying. So I have used shallow fry. Taste no compromise

Ingredients

 
Urad dal – 1/2 cup
Yellow moong dal – 1/2 cup
channa dal – 2 cup
Red chilies – 2 cup
Asafoetida/ hing – 1 big piece
Sesame seeds – 1 tablespoon
Oil- 1/4 cup

 

Method

Dry roast Urad dal. Remove it

 

Dry roast yellow moong dal. Remove it

 

Dry roast Sesame seeds & hing. Remove it. Dry roast red chili remove it

 

 

Heat oil. Shallow fry Channa dal till slight brown color. Strain oil. keep it aside

Reserve 3 tablespoon of channa dal. Mix all ingredients. 

 

Grind to a powder with salt. Mix in reserved channa dal

 

Store it in an airtight container
