Other day I visited my sis and she asked for valaipoo vada. I knew the ingredients but not exact measurements. So I called my mum to get measurement as I didn’t have my recipe notes with me. Also added to my list of things to be posted. Recently we had space under our blocks for common gardening. There was a Plantain tree there. It had couple of flowers and she allowed me to take some, nice of her. I started using that space for my little gardening effort. I have added onion as the last ingredient as my first son likes it without onion. So reserved the dough for him with out onion. You can mix in all the ingredients together. Add onion as the last ingredient.
Ingredients
Bengal Gram dal / Broken chana dal – 1 cup
Thoor Dal / Thuvar dal – 1/4 cup
Red chillies – 2-3 (adjust to spice level)
Shallots / Small onion /Onion – 1/2 cup (chopped finely)
Chopped plantain flour / valaipoo – 2 cups
Salt to taste
Oil for deep frying
Curry Leaves / Coriander / Mint leaves – 2.5 tablespoon (finely chopped)
Fennel seeds powder – 1/2 teaspoon
Method:
Clean Plantain flower / Valaipoo and chop finely. Leave it in butter milk till you need it. Wash and Soak dhals and redsalt chillies for 2 hrs. Drain the water completely.
Drain Valaipoo and keep it aside. Grind dhal, fennel powder and red chillies coarsely with salt. Add Chopped curry, coriander and mint leaves. Mix well.
Add valaipoo and onion and mix well.
Heat oil for deep frying. Take a lemon size ball
Flatten it with palm. Place it hot oil slowly. Cook it in low flame till “Shhh” sound subside.
Remove it from oil. Place it in kitchen tissue to drain extra oil.
Serve hot
