foxtail millet sweet pongal – Thinai sweet pongal – Thinai sakkarai pongal – Simple Pooja recipes – Simple Festivals recipe – Simple naivedyam recipes

These days we make millet based recipes very often. I have tried most of the South Indian traditional recipes with Millet. Luckily my family loves this substitution too.  For this I have used equal portion of Moong dhal and foxtail millet but you can use 1:2 also. I prefer 1:1. I have added milk also as my mum always add bit of milk for sweet pongal. It is completely optional. I feel Jaggery based sweets tastes better the day after.
Ingredients

Split yellow Moong dhal – 3/4 cup
Foxtail millet / Thinai – 3/4 cup
Jaggery – 1.5 cup
Salt a pinch
Milk – 1/2 cup
Ghee / Oil  – 1 tablespoon
Cashew nuts and Raisins – 1.5 tablespoon

Method
Dry roast Moong dhal and thinai separately.

Melt Jaggery with water (just to cover jaggery). Drain the impurity and continue to boil till softball consistency.. Keep it aside

Heat the ghee in a pan and add cashew nuts and raisins. Fry till Cashews are brown in color. Keep it aside. In a pressure pan add Dhal and Foxtail Millet. Add 4.5 cups of water. Cook it for 4-5 whistle. Switch it off

When it is cool down remove the lid and mash it well. Add jaggery syrup Mix well.

Add milk. Mix well. Let it boil for another 3-5 mins. Continue to stir.Add fried  nuts and mix well.
