I have posted Chana masala before. But I wanted to try this Punjabi channa masala which is done with slightly different spices. In traditional way there is no coconut added but my mum adds it. I find it adds taste to the masala. So I have decided to add coconut. But choice is yours you can ignore it if you don’t prefer to add. This goes well with roti / rice / naan. I normally do chana bread / channa bread with it for next day breakfast. Will post that recipe soon
Ingredients
Dry Chick peas / chana dal / channa dal / garbanzo beans – 3/4 cup
Onion – 1 medium (Chopped finely)
Tomatoes – 2 (chopped finely)
Garlic – 3-5 (chopped finely)
Ginger – 1/2 inch (chopped finely)
Coconut – 3 tablespoon
Green chillies – 2 (slit into 2)
Red chilli powder – 1/4 teaspoon (adjust to your spice level)
Garam masala – 1 teaspoon
Turmeric powder – 1/4 teaspoon
Salt to taste
Oil – 3 teaspoon
Bay leaves – 1
Clove – 2
Cinnamon – 1 inch
Cumin seeds – 1 teaspoon
Coriander leaves – 1 tablespoon (finely chopped)
Method:
Soak the chick peas overnight and cook it with salt. I did it in pressure cooker for about 4-5 whistle. The chick peas should soft when cooked. Drain the water and keep it aside
Heat the pan with 2 teaspoon of oil. Add ginger, garlic. Fry till garlic is brown in color. Add onion fry till they are brown in color. Add tomatoes and fry till they are mushy. Add coconut fry for another 2 mins. Add Turmeric powder, garam masala, chilli powder, green chillies and salt and mix well. Fry for another 2 mins. Switch off the flame and let it cool down. Grind it to the smooth paste. Keep it aside
Heat the pan and add rest of the oil. When it is hot add bay leaf, Cloves, cinnamon and fry till nice aroma released from the masala items. Add cumin seeds and let it crackle. Add grinded paste and required water.(I have added about 1.5 cup of water as my grinded paste was bit thick). Let it boil. Add cooked chana dal. And mix well. Let it boil for another 3-5 mins till you get desired consistency. Switch it off. Garnish it with coriander leaves and raw onion.
Serve hot
