Vazhai Thandu (valaithandu, Banana Stem) Kootu

I like Valaipoo or valaithandu. So I buy these vegetables whenever I get chance. My kids like it too. I am pretty happy that we get Indian vegetables in Singapore (in fact in India we have season for some vegetables) In Singapore pretty much you will get all vegetables all year around. This week I have asked my hubby to pick up some Valaithandu and I didn’t check it till reached home. It was less than normally what I buy. So instead of Poriyal I have decided to do kootu. It turn out to be good

Ingredients:

Valaithandu (Plantain Stem) – 2 cup
Toor dal / Thuvar Dhal – 1/4 cup
Moong dhal – 1/4 cup
Onion – 1 (Chopped finely)
Tomato – 1 (Chopped finely)
Turmeric powder -1/4 teaspoon
Garlic – 4 pods (finely chopped)
Curry Leaves – 10
Red chillies – 3-5
Salt per taste
Mustard seeds – 1/2 teaspoon
Urad dhal – 1 teaspoon
Cumin seed / jeera powder – 1 teaspoon
Oil – 2 teaspoon

Method:

Clean the fiber and chop the valaithandu. Soak it in buttermilk water or lemon water overnight. Using fork remove the fiber and pressure cook with salt. Drain the water
Pressure cook the toor dhal with 3/4 cup of water and mash it.
Heat the kada and add oil. When it is hot add mustard seeds. Let it pop. Add urad dhal, Red chillies and curry leaves. Fry till urad dhal is brown in color. Add Garlic and fry till it  is brown in color. Add onion fry till it is soft. Add Tomatoes and fry till mushy. Add cooked valaithanu. Add mashed toor dal.
Add cumin seed powder, salt, moong dal (Pasiparuppu). Add enough water and pressure cook till 2 whistle.
Enjoy it with rice
