Surakkai (bottle gourd, Lauki, Dudhi) with black eye beans kootu / gravy recipe

One of my mum specialty is kootu. I have asked her to make surakkai kootu. I thought she will do normal one with moong dal. Instead she soaked black head beans.  I am a big fan of that bean. It is very tasty and healthy recipe. Perfect combination of vegetable, protein. Nice dish for dieters
Ingredients:

Sorakkai – 2 cups (chopped finely. I prefer fine as it blends well with beans)
Black eye beans – 1/2 cup
Onion – 15 small onions (chopped finely)
Garlic – 2 pods (chopped finely)
Cumin seeds – 1 teaspoon
Mustard seeds – 1/4 teaspoon
Urad dhal – 1 teaspoon
Green chillies – 4 (slit into 2. Adjust to your spice level)
Salt to taste
Curry leaves – 10
Oil – 1 teaspoon
Rice flour – 1 teaspoon (optional)

Method:

Soak black eye bean overnight. Heat pressure pan and add oil. When it is hot add cumin seeds and mustard seeds. Let it pop. When it pops add urad dhal and fry till dal is brown in color. Add onion and fry till it is transparent. Add curry leaves and green chillies. Fry for 10 sec. Add chopped sorakkai, black eye bean and salt. Mix well. Add 1/4 cup water (normally sorakkai leaves out water too). Close the lid and cook till 3 whistles. Switch off the flame. And when it is cool down open the lid and add rice flour. Mix well. Cook till kootu reaches desired consistency

Serve hot with roti, chapathi or rice
