bottle gourd (sorakkai) kootu

When I was young Sorakkai is one of the vegetable comes from my grandma field. And every time my mum does it we all used to make funny face..and big fuss.. That time my mum used to tell us this is good for health, Skin etc, etc… At that time who cares right? That way I think now a days we are more fortunate as our kids are more health conscious than we are and more open to have food that is good for their health.
I try to include Sorakkai / Papaya / White pumpkin at least once a week as part of our meal.

Ingredients:

Bottle gourd – 2.5 cups (peeled and diced)
Moong Dhal – 1/3 cup
Onion – 1 (chopped)
Tomato – 1/2 (chopped)
Turmeric powder – 1/4 teaspoon.
Salt (to taste)
Coriander leaves – 2 teaspoon. (chopped)
Mustard seeds – 1/2 teaspoon.
Urad dal – 1/2 teaspoon
Curry leaves – 1 sprig
Oil
To grind:
Green chillies – 3
Urad Dhal – 1/2 Teaspoon
Cumin seeds – 1 Teaspoon
Curry leaves (fresh and tender) – 1 sprigs


Method:


Add 1/4 teaspoon Oil and roast the To Grind ingredients till the dhal is brown
Grind the “To Grind” ingredients into a thick paste by adding little water. Keep aside.
Cook moong dhal in Pressure cooker till one whistle
Add Turmeric Powder and Sorakai in pressure cooker till one whistle
In another pan, heat oil and add Mustard Seeds. When the seeds splutter, add onions and saute till they turn translucent. 
Add tomatoes and saute. 
Add Cood dhal and Soraikai
Add Grinded paste to this and let it boil ( 3-5 mins)
Garnish with coriander leaves and remove from heat.
