Broccoli Kootu – Side dish for rice, roti

My entire family loves broccoli (except me). Broccoli is one of the first few vegetables I tried when I moved to Singapore. I normally do roasted broccoli / broccoli wrap. I wanted to do some Indian dish with it. My sis told me about kootu I was skeptical about it. But to my surprise I could finish my serving size.

Ingredients

Broccoli – 3 cups
Channa dal / Bengal gram dhal – 1/2 cup
Coconut – 1/4 cup
Cumin seeds – 1 teaspoon
Chilli powder – 1/2 teaspoon
Turmeric powder – 1/4 teaspoon
Onion – 1 (medium size. chopped finely)
Tomato – 1 (medium size. chopped finely)
Salt to taste
Curry leaves – 10
Oil- 3 teaspoon
Mustard seeds- 1/4 teaspoon
Urad dhal – 1 teaspoon
asafoetida – A pinch

Method

Grind coconut, cumin seeds, green chillies with little water.

Heat the pan with oil add mustard seeds let it pop. Add urad dhal, asafoetida and curry leaves. Fry till dhal is brown in color. Add onion fry till transparent. Add tomatoes and fry till mushy.

Add salt, Chilli powder, turmeric powder. Fry for a min. Add Channa dhal and broccoli.
Add grinded coconut and 1.5 cup of water and close the lid to cook it. I have used pressure cooker and cook till 2 whistle.

When it cool down open the lid. Add coriander leaves and mix well

Serve hot
