Kadappa ( Potatoes cooked in spicy lentil gravy)

I did my 11th std (1st year JC) in SVS @ Trichy. Stayed in the hostel for a year (after that my family moved to Trichy because of my pestering). Most of the time I will go home for the weekend (even though you are not allowed to go every weekend). Every weekend they serve Dosa (we tease that is dunlop tyre) because it will be thick. If you know the cook you can get the paper roast! But the side dish they serve for that is good. Kadappa! It goes pretty well with Dosa/idlli. Mint leave is my addition to the recipe
Ingredients:

Potatoes- 4 to 5 ( medium sized chopped )
Moong dhal- 1/4 Cup
Onion- 1 sliced thinly
Garlic pods- 2 chopped finely
Green Chillies – 2 slit into 2
Lemon juice- 1 tablespoon
Oil- 1/2 tablespoon
Salt to taste

To Grind:
Grated fresh coconut-2 tablespoon
Green chillies- 2-4 (adjust to your spiciness)
Garlic pods- 2
Roasted split gram dhal- 1/2 tablespoon
Cinnamon stick- 1/2 inch
Coriander seeds- 2 teaspoon
Mint Leaves – 5-10
I prefer it to be dry roast and grind. If you are ok you can grind without roasting it

Tempering:
Oil- 1 tbsp
Cumin seeds- 2 teaspoon
Mustard seeds- 1/4 teaspoon
Curry leaves – 15-20

To Garnish:
Coriander leaves- a tablespoon

Method:

Grind all the ingredients to be ground using little water.

Heat the oil in a kadai or pan, when oil is hot add mustard seeds. When it pops add the curry leaves, cumin seeds and garlic.  When the garlic turns light brown, add the onion, slit Green chillies and fry well.  Once the onion turns transparent add the chopped potatoes and mix it well.  Wash and add moong dhal to potatoes. Cover the pan and cook the potatoes and dhal with salt and enough water.  (In pressure cooker cook it till 3-4 whistles)

After the potatoes and dhal cooked get cooked, mash it slightly. Add ground paste and salt.  Allow it to boil for about 10 minutes or until the ground paste and potato comes together well.

Finally add the lemon juice and mix it well. switch it off immediately. After adding lemon don’t boil the gravy
Serve the gravy with idli / chapathi / Utthapam or dosa.
