Kondaikadalai (Channa, Chick peas) Rice – Chana rice – Chana Fried rice – Healthy one pot meal

I am stunned that I haven’t done this rice in last 2 months. This is one of my specialty and kids love it. Base recipe for this is from Malika Badrinath. I have modified over the years to suite our taste and make it more healthy. It is really finger licking good and it is healthy also (rare right? )


Ingredients


Basmathi Rice – 1 Cup
White Channa / Kondaikadalai – 1/2 Cup

Tomato – 4 Medium
Soya Milk – 1 Cup
Small Onion – 1/2 Cup 
Garlic – 5 Pods
Oil – 3 Tablespoon
Coriander Leaves – 3 tablespoon
Green Chillies – 2 (adjust to ur taste)
Kasoori Methi – 1 tablespoon (I use Dry)
Gram masala powder – 1/2 teaspoon
Cinnamon – 1 Inch
Cardamoms – 2
Cloves – 4
Bay Leaf – 1
Salt per taste
Ghee – 1 teaspoon


Grind together
Fry below ingredients in 1 teaspoon of Oil and grind to paste
Small Onion – 10
Red Chillies – 6 (per ur spice level)
Cumin Seeds – 1 1/2 teaspoon




Method


Soak channa dhal overnight. Pressure cook for 15 mins with bit of salt and keep it aside
Soak Rice for 10 mins and drain completely
Heat the kada and add Ghee
Add Rice and fry for 2 mins (till it is completely dry). Keep it aside

Blench the Tomato in hot water. Remove the skin and grind into paste. 

Heat rest of the oil in the kada. When it is hot add cardamom, cinnamon, Cloves and bay leaves. Fry for 1 min
Add Garlic and fry till it is brown

Add Slit green chillies and small onion fry till onion is translucent

Add grinded masala and in medium flame fry till nice smell comes
Add tomato paste, Kasoori methi, salt, garam masala powder and boil for few mins

Add Channa and soya milk (1 and 1/2 cup) and let it boil
When it start to boil add fried rice and mix well

Reduce the flame and cook with closing the lid with heavy weight on the top (for 20 mins)
Garnish with coriander leaves
