When we were having lunch at office I had noticed nice dhal that my colleague brought. It was like kootu but not tasted the same as what I make. So curious I asked about it. He gave me his wife number and I called her to check. She told me it is Lauki (Surakkai) Chana dal. I noted down the recipe from her. I did this as a side dish to chapatti. It tasted good with rice also. This is very healthy too
Ingredients:
Bottle gourd (Sorakkai / Lauki) – 2 cups (cut into small pieces)
Bengal Gram Dhal / Chana dal – 1/2 cup
Turmeric powder – 1/4 teaspoon
Green chillies – 4 (slit into 2) adjust per your spice level
Asafoetida (Hing) – pinch
Red Chili powder – 1/4 teaspoon
Coriander powder – 1 teaspoon
Riped Tomatoes – 2 finely chopped
Gram Masala powder – 1 teaspoon
Lemon Juice – 1 tablespoon
Fresh coriander leaves – 1 tablespoon (finely chopped)
Sugar – 1/2 teaspoon (Optional)
oil – 1 teaspoon
Curry leaves – 10-15
Cumin seeds – 1 teaspoon
Salt per taste
Method:
Soak Bengal gram dhal for 1 hour to 2 hour. Drain the water. Pressure cook bengal gram dhal, Bottle gourd with turmeric powder and salt. I have cooked till 5 whistle. If you don’t have pressure cooker cook on direct flame till fully cooked. Keep it aside
Heat kada and add oil. When it is hot add add cumin seeds. Fry till it crackle. Add green chillies, Asafoetida and fry for 20 sec. Add Tomato, curry leaves and fry for 2 mins. Add Chilli powder, coriander powder, gram masala and fry till nice aroma comes. Add this to cooked dhal and bottle gourd. Close the lid and cook till another whistle. When it cools down open the lid add lemon juice and coriander leaves and mix well.
Serve hot with rice / roti / chapatti
