Oats Pongal

I eat Oats for breakfast once or twice a week. Today I was having calls from morning so decided to work from home. By the time I finish my first batch of calls it is about  8:30 and had little break in between. So decide to have something good and really enjoy with bit of time on hand for breakfast. Normally I am not a big fan of pongal in fact before marriage even during pongal days my mum or grandparents need to cook something
different for us. In our family, all my cousins / niece/ nephew of my generation who is the first kid in the family don’t like Pongal or Curd….
For me this one even though I call it Pongal because of ingredients we are using in this, it has different taste than traditional ven pongal  (plain one without the dhal) also I use higher propostion of dhal normally to give different flavour.

Ingredients
Oats – 1/2 cup (Use Rolled oats). Today I run out of it so I used normal oats
Moong Dhal (Split Green gram dhal without skin)- 1/4 cup ( I hv added more as I like more dhal in pongal)
Fresh ginger – 1 inch
Salt – 1/2 teaspoon or as per taste
Oil – 1 teaspoons
Whole Black pepper – 1 teaspoon
cumin seeds – 1/2 teaspoon
Curry leaves – few

Dry Red Chillies – 1
Green Chillies – 2 slit into 2
Cashew Nut – 5 to  6(Optional)

Method:
Remove the skin from the ginger and chop finely.
In a dry kadai put oats and fry just hot to touch. Keep it aside.
Same kadai put the dhal and fry just for few seconds.
Put both oats and dhal in a pressure cooker. Add chopped ginger,  salt and 2 cups of water. I prefer it to be watery so I hv added more water if u want this to be bit thicker reduce the water. Close with lid and pressure cook it for 2 to 3 whistles.
Allow to cool. Then open the cooker and mix it well.
In a small kadai put the Oil and when it is hot, add  slit green chilli, curry leaves, Cashew Nut and pepper and  jeera seeds. Fry for 30 sec
Pour it over the pongal. Mix it once again thoroughly.
