My kids are big fans of Paneer. My first son loves everything with Chana / chole also. I was looking to make some side dish for Naan/ Roti and he was asking for paneer chole masala. I have followed my Punjabi chole masala recipe. Instead of coconut you can add either cashew or melon seeds. This curry goes well with fried rice / roti / naan or bhatura. If you make it little thicker can be good sandwich spread too. Multipurpose curry is really good right? you can double the qty and reserve one batch for sandwich!
Ingredients:
Dry Chick peas / chana dal / channa dal / garbanzo beans – 1/2 cup
Paneer – 1/2 cupOnion – 1 medium (Chopped finely)
Tomatoes – 2 (chopped finely)
Garlic – 3-5 (chopped finely)
Ginger – 1/2 inch (chopped finely)
Coconut – 3 tablespoon
Green chillies – 2 (slit into 2)
Red chilli powder – 1/4 teaspoon (adjust to your spice level)
Garam masala or chana masala or subji masala or kitchen king masala powder – 1 teaspoon
Turmeric powder – 1/4 teaspoon
Salt to taste
Oil – 4 teaspoon
Bay leaves – 1
Clove – 2
Cinnamon – 1 inch
Cumin seeds – 1 teaspoon
Coriander leaves – 1 tablespoon (finely chopped)
Dry Methi leaves / Kastoori methi – 1 teaspoon
Method:
Soak the chick peas overnight and cook it with salt. I did it in pressure cooker for about 4-5 whistle. The chick peas should soft when cooked. Drain the water and keep it aside
Fry the paneer with 1 teaspoon of oil and keep it aside.
Heat the pan with 2 teaspoon of oil. Add ginger, garlic. Fry till garlic is brown in color. Add onion fry till they are brown in color. Add tomatoes and fry till they are mushy. Add coconut fry for another 2 mins.
Add Turmeric powder, garam masala, chilli powder, green chillies and salt and mix well. Fry for another 2 mins. Add coconut fry for another 2 mins. Switch off the flame and let it cool down.
Grind it to the smooth paste. Keep it aside
Heat the pan and add rest of the oil. When it is hot add bay leaf, Cloves, cinnamon and fry till nice aroma released from the masala items. Add cumin seeds and let it crackle. Add grinded paste and required water.(I have added about 1.5 cup of water as my grinded paste was bit thick).
Let it boil. Add cooked chana dal. And mix well. Let it boil for another 3-5 mins till you get desired consistency. Add paneer and boil for another 2 mins.Switch it off. Add coriander leaves and dry methi leaves. mix well
Serve hot
