Small Onion Sambar

This was my first dish when I started cooking. It is so easy that anyone can try My husband and I  love the small onion Sambar however my 1st son is not a big fan of onion so every-time before I do this I need to get permission from him so that he is not making big fuss on the dinning table (My excuse to him always I don’t have any other vegetables). Also I pressure cook the Onion so that he cannot even see it.

Ingredients:

Sambar onion – 20
Red Chilli – 2
Fenugreek Seeds – 1/4 teaspoon
Garlic – 4 Pods
Thuvar dhal – 1/2  cup
Tamarind – small lemon size
Sambar Powder – 1 tablespoon
Turmeric powder – ¼ teaspoon
Salt – 1 teaspoon or as per taste
Mustard seeds – 1/4 teaspoonCumin Seeds – 1/4 teaspoon
Oil – 3 teaspoonAsafoetida powder a pinch
Few curry leaves

Method:
Wash thuvar dhal and add two cups of water along with  turmeric powder and  fenugreek seeds and pressure cook till soft.
Soak tamarind in water and squeeze out the juice. It should be of 2 cups.
Peel the onion and keep it whole. (I have cut it because my 1st son is not big fan of Onion)
In a kadai put the oil and when it is hot add mustard seeds when splutter . Add Cumin seeds let it crackle
When it pops up add asafotida and whole onions, Red chillies, curry leaves and fry till the onion looks glossy.
Add tamarind juice along with sambar powder, turmeric and salt. Cook on medium flame till it boils well. Then add the cooked dhal mashed. Stir and cook till all blends well and thick.
