Idli is one of the main breakfast in South India. But Spot idli is something new to me. Spot idli is common street food in Hyderabad. The spiciness in this recipe can be adjust to your spice level. This is simple yet very tasty idli recipe.
This is perfect for breakfast, dinner or evening snack or even perfect of lunch box. Recent years my sons prefer to have dosa. but this recipe they don’t mind having idli. so this definite keep recipe. It is one of the must try idli.

Ingredients for making spot idli:
- White onion – 1 (chopped finely)
- Garlic – 5 pods (chopped)
- Tomatoes – 1 -2 (medium. Chopped)
- Butter – 2 tablespoon
- Coriander leaves – 2 tablespoon
- Green chili – 1-2 (adjust to spice level)
- Mustard seeds – 1/2 teaspoon
- Curry leaves – 10
- Idli podi – 4 tablespoon
- Red chili powder – 1 teaspoon
- Salt to taste
- Oil – 4 tablespoon
- Tamarind paste – 1 teaspoon
- Idli Batter – 3- 5 laddle
Step by step instruction to make spot idli:
Heat butter. Add mustard seeds let it crackle add curry leaves. Add Garlic fry for 2 mins. Add Onion and fry till transparent. Add Tomatoes and tamarind paste.
Fry till mushy. Add red chili powder, idli podi and oil. Add another 1/4 cup water. Adjust salt. Fry till till raw smell goes off. Add coriander leaves. Divide that into 3 portion. Add idli batter
Close it with lid. Let it cook. Turn it over and cook again for 2 mins.
It is ready to be served
Notes
- You can add finely chopped vegetables like beans, carrot
- You can add grated coconut
- Sesame oil is better for this recipe

Spot Idli
Ingredients
- 1 White onion chopped finely

- 1-2 Tomatoes Medium, Finely chopped
- 2 tbsp Butter
- 2 tbsp Coriander leaves chopped finely
- 1-2 Green chili chopped finely
- 1/2 tsp Mustard seeds
- 10 Curry leaves
- 4 tbsp Idli podi
- 1 tsp Red chili powder adjust to your spice level
- Salt to taste
- 4 tbsp Oil
- 1 tsp Tamarind paste
- 3-4 laddle Idli Batter
Instructions
