I love the spicy versions of steamed kozhukattai. My neighbour told me pidi kolukattai with tamarind. I have asked for the recipe but I have misplaced it last year & almost forgot. Other day when I was looking for option to do the snacks then I remembered so I asked her again. She gave me the recipe & 2 days later she has given few kolukkattais too. So nice of her. This is simple yet tasty spicy version.
Ingredients:
Raw Rice – 1 cup
coconut – 1 (medium size. Break it and grate it. I got 1.5 cup)
Salt to taste
Tamarind paste – 3 tablespoon (thick paste)
Sesame oil – 3 teaspoon
Mustard seeds – 1/2 teaspoon
Urad dhal – 1 tespoon
Green chillies – 1 (sliced)
Channa dal – 1 teaspoon
Curry leaves – 10 (chopped)
Red chillies – 2-3 (Adjust to spice level)
Method:
Wash and soak rice for 2 hrs. Grind it with coconut and salt.
Heat oil. Add mustard seeds let it pop. Add urad dhal, channa dal, hing, Red Chillies and curry leaves. fry till dhals are brown in color. Add Tamarind paste and water.
Let it boil. Add grinded paste.Cook it in low medium flame. Till it is cooked
Switch it off. When it is cool down knead it to smooth dough. Take small lemon size ball
Flatten it. Arrange it in idli plate and steam it for 10-12 mins or till it is cooked
Once done remove it
Serve hot
