Tirunelveli kara kulambu recipe is very famous in down south Tamilnadu. There are different types of Kara Kuzhambu and People often call this as puli kulambu.

I love puli Kuzhambu and there are different ways of doing puli kulambu. So I always try different kulambu with different spices. I have tried the gravy with Thuvar dhal (Jackfruit seeds with drumstick gravy). It was really different and tasty. So when I heard this combo from my mum I requested her to make it. Here you go with the recipe. I will be away for a short trip to China will not be having access to facebook and blogger.. will be back soon.. Ingredients:

Shallots / small onion – 30
Garlic – 20 pods
Tamarind – 1 lemon size
Curry leaves – 10
Jaggery – 1 teaspoon
Mustard seeds – 1/2 teaspoon
Urad dhal – 1 teaspoon
Asafoetida– 1/2 teaspoon
Salt to taste
Gingerly oil – 1/4 cup
Mashed Garlic – 2 tablespoon
Turmeric powder – 1/4 teaspoon


Roast and grind


Pepper / Milagu – 2 teaspoon
Fenugreek Seeds – 1/8 teaspoon
Cumin seeds – 1.5 teaspoon
Thuvar dhal / Tuar Dhal – 4 teaspoon
Coriander seeds – 5 teaspoon
Dry chillies – 7-9 (adjust to your spice level)
Gingerly oil – 3 tablespoon

Method

Add 2.5 cup of water to tamarind and make a smooth paste.

Heat the pan and 3 tablespoon of oil. Add all the ingredients under Roast and grind section. Fry till it is brown. Switch it off and grind it to the powder.

Add 1/4 cup of oil. add mustard seeds, Curry leaves and urad dhal. Fry till it is brown color. Add Mashed Garlic and Asafoetida  and fry till brown color. Add small onion and garlic. Fry for 3 mins. Add tamarind Paste and required water ( I have added 1 cup), Salt. Let it boil.

Add turmeric powder, grinded powder, jaggery. Let it boil till oil separate it

 

Tiruvelveli Kara Kulambu is ready, Serve it hot!!
