Moong Dal Poorana Kozhukattai recipe – Sweet Split Yellow dhal Modak recipe – Modagam recipe – Ganesh Chaturthi Recipes – Pooja recipes – naivedyam recipes

Every year I do Sweet Kozhukattai with chana dal / Bengal gram dal  pooranam or stuffing. This year for a change I want to try with split moog dal / yellow dal. It came out very well. I love any jaggery base sweet and this one no exception :-). This is very simple to make …
I wish my friends a very happy vinayagar chaturthi.

Ingredients:

For Outer Covering:

Rice Flour – 1.5 Cups
Maida – 1 tablespoon
Water – 1 1/2 Cups
Salt a pinch

For Stuffing:

Channa Dhal / Bengal Gram dhal – 1/2 cup
Coconut – 1/4 cup
Grated Jaggery – 1/4 cup
Cardamom powder – a pinch

Method:
Boil 1 1/2 cup of water, teaspoon of oil with Salt. Reduce the flame and add the flours and mix well with spoon. Switch off the flame and leave it for 3-5 mins. Apply oil on your hand and mix the dough well.

Make them in to a soft dough (Adjust water accordingly. The dough should be like smooth chapathi dough). ( I have done the flour in 2 batches). Cover it with wet cloth till you need it

Dry roast Moong dal / split yellow Dhal and cook it with 1 cup of water

When it is cool down add 1/4 cup of jaggery and 1/4 cup of coconut. Cook it till the mixture is thick and leaves the side.Take a small qty and make a ball it should hold then it is ready for Kozhukattai / Modak. Now switch it off.

Let it cool down till you can handle it. Make small gooseberry size balls and keep it aside.

For using hand to make Modak

Grease ur hands with oil.Make lemon sized rice dough small balls and flatten them as thin as possible like a small cup.Now keep the stuffing ball and keep in middle of the cup as shown below.

Pull around the edges and bring it to center over the top of the filling. Bring it together to form the modak shape. Now follow the procedure for the remaining dough

For using Mould to make Modak
Grease the mould with oil and Follow the steps in the pic below take lemon size dough and take 3/4th of dough and press it along the sides of mould (My mould is bigger if yours is smaller you need less dough)

Close the mould and keep the gooseberry size of the pooranam / stuffing.

Close the bottom with the reminder of 1/4th dough. Carefully Open one side of the mould

Remove it from Mould and arrange it in Greased idli plate. Repeat the process.

Steam it for 10-15mins.After 10-12 mins. check if the kozhukottais are done. Once done it will be shiny and won’t stick to your fingers

Enjoy the Modak or sweet kolukattai
