These days I have been trying millet based recipes. My kids have the habit of eating same type of food if they like for a while and suddenly developing dislike for it. Now a days they love millet based recipe .. For me hardly notice any taste in it but somehow my 2nd son says it is far better than regular rice. Anyway since they are into Millet base recipes I want to try normal Indian food but replace rice in it with millets. Pongal is one of easiest and best way to introduce millet to your family. This one you can try with Samai / Varagu also. I have used Rice cooker method for this post. But you can try this in Pressure cooker too.
Ingredients:
Kuthiraivalli / Barnyard Millet – 1 cup
Split moong dhal – 1/2 cup
Ginger – 1 inch (Chopped finely)
Salt to taste
Ghee / Oil as needed
Crushed Pepper – 1 teaspoon
Curry leaves – 10
Crushed Cumin seeds – 1 teaspoon
Green chillies – 2 (slit into 2)
Coriander leaves – 1 tablespoon (finely chopped)
Cashews – 10
Method:
Wash and soak Moong dhal and Barnyard millet for 30 mins. Cook it in rice cooker with 5 cups of water. Add salt when the rice is cooked 3/4th.
Heat pan and add ghee/oil When it is hot add green chillies, Curry leaves, cashew, crushed pepper and cumin seeds fry till nice aroma is released and cashews are brown in color.
Add to cooked rice and mix well. Add salt. And mash the rice. Cook it completely
Serve hot with sambar or chutney
