Broad Beans Poriyal Recipe

I usually do simple spicy avarakkai fry most of the time. I wanted to make thoran instead. Adding fresh coconut really gives a nice flavor. I have used coconut oil to enhance the flavor. Thoran can be done with almost all the vegetables. I have used 3/4 cooked Toor dal in this. This is a naturally vegan recipe. Thoran is a very famous South Indian esp from Kerala side dish which is served as a part full meal. Traditional Thoran is without Dal but I made it with Dal as I didn’t use onion.

Ingredients

Broad beans / avarakkai- 2 cups
3/4th cooked toor dal – 1/4 cup
salt to taste
turmeric powder -1/2 teaspoon
Coconut – 1/4 cup
mustard seeds – 1teaspoon
Urad dal – 2 teaspoons
curry leaves – 10
oil – 3 teaspoons (coconut oil)
Onion – 1 (optional. I didn’t use)

Method:

Heat oil. Add mustard seeds. Let it crackle. Add Urad dal and curry leaves. Fry till brown in color. Add onion at this stage if you are using it. Add salt and fry till transparent. Add chopped broad beans, salt, turmeric. Mix well.

Close it cook it. Add Dal

Add coconut. Mix it. Cook for another 2-4 mins

Switch it off
