Makkan Peda Recipe – Arcot makkan peda recipe – Simple Diwali Sweet Recipes – Festival recipes

During my childhood days getting Gulab Jamun / Indian sweet doughnut for every small achievement is given. Also for Festivals like Diwali Gulab Jamun is must too. I got to taste different versions of Gulab Jamun from our neighbours (to the point 1 month after Diwali no more Jamun) I used taste this stuffed Jamun (yes those days that’s how we call it) Later I realized it is called Makkan Peda. After my marriage both of my kids are not big fan of Indian Sweets. Everytime they want me to try out something new Savory (esp murukkus). So I seldom do any sweet. So I have to find opportunities to tryout something like this. there is no better occasion than Diwali / Deepavali
Ingredients

All purpose flour – 1 cup
Koya (sweetless Palkova or Milk solids)-1/2 cup
Ghee – 2 tablespoon
Cooking soda – 1/4 teaspoon
Curd – 1/4 cup
Oil to deep fry (My mum fry it in ghee)

For Stuffing

Mixed nuts and Raisin – 1/4 cup (Chopped into small pieces. I have used almonds, pista and raisins) + 1 tablespoon (for serving)

syrup Ingredients:

1 3/4 cup sugar
1 1/2 cup water
1/4 tsp cardamom powder
pinch of saffron strands (optional. I didn’t add)

Method:

Mix in all purpose flour, koya, ghee, soda and curd. mix well. Add water little by little to make stiff dough. Leave the dough aside for about 15 minutes.

Meanwhile let’s make sugar syrup. Add all the ingredients under syrup ingredients section in a  large pan and bring to a boil. Let the syrup boil for a minute or two until the sugar dissolves. Can keep it in lowest heat until it is thick, one string consistency. Now Syrup is ready. When you immerse peda in the syrup it should be warm.

Lets make Peda now,  knead the dough again, if needed grease the hands with a little oil before working the dough.Roll into small lemon size ball. Make sure there are no cracks in the ball. If the balls has crack roll it flat and roll back again. Flatten it to make Peda shape. place mixed nuts and raisins

Close all the side and seal it properly and make smooth balls. Repeat till you make all pedas. Now Heat oil in frying pan when the oil is hot reduce the flame and add few pedas at time. Peda will expand so make sure you have enough space between pedas otherwise it won’t cook uniformally. Make sure the flame is also medium low otherwise the color will change but Peda will get get cook evenly

Drain the oil and remove it from pan. Place it in kitchen tissue to drain extra oil (for a min)

Add the Pedas to the warm syrup. Keep the Peda covered in the syrup and the Pedas will expand in the syrup.

You can serve this after 2 hrs
