Manathakkali keerai thanni saaru

I love Manathakkali. Both my mum and my MIL does this very often as they get this from their backyard. When we are in school we used to fight for the fruit from it too..My mum does lot of dishes with it. Most of the time I do only mannathakkali kootu. Recently I have started making thogayal with it also. Kids love it also.
Ingredients:

Manathakkali Keerai – 1 bunch (When taken leaves it is about 2 cups)
Coconut milk – 1 cup (I have used thin one. If you are using thick one you can reduce the qty)
Cumin seeds – 1 teaspoon
Small Onion /Shallots – 7-9 (peel and slice it thinly)
Green Chillies – 2
Roasted gram dhal powder – 1 teaspoon (make it to powder)
Salt per taste
Oil – 1 teaspoon
Water as required

Method:

Heat the kada and add oil. When oil is hot add onion, green chillies and cumin seeds. Fry till onion is cooked. Add keerai and water and let the keerai cooked. Add coconut milk and mix well. Let it boil for 20 sec. Add roasted gram dhal powder and mix well. Cook for another 2 mins.

Switch off and serve hot with rice

Moushumi I live in Vashi. Any Shop that sells South Indian stuff will be able to give you manathakkali. just ask by its name. these are generally dried berries of the plant. We do not find the leaves commonly here. So I just rub the dried fruits gently to release the tiny seeds within. I justsowed them into a pot and now I have a few plants that are giving me leaves as well as berries. In case you are not inclined to grow them then you can simply fry the dried ones from the shop and add to your regular Dal tastes equally good. .. Indu
