I love this Onion chutney with idli / dosa.. This chutney is easy to make and good for long distance travel. I don’t like raw smell of onion in chutneys and gravies so normally I fry first before making the chutney. First time when I did this version I was pleasantly surprised with the taste of it.. I have posted few versions of onion chutneys Vengaya Vadagam Chutney, Coconut Onion Chutney, Red Onion Chutney. You can checkout those as well. Now over to this recipe…
Ingredients:
Onion – 2.5 (sliced into 1 inch cubes)
Urad dhal – 1 teaspoon
Bengal gram dhal – 1 teaspoon
Red chilli – 7-9 (Adjust to your taste)
Salt to taste
Tamarind – Marble size
Oil – 1 teaspoon
To Temper
Oil – 1/2 teaspoon
Mustard seeds – 1/4 teaspoon
Urad dhal – 1 teaspoon
Curry leaves – 10
Method:
Soak tamarind in 1/4 of hot water for 15 mins. Heat the kada and add a teaspoon of oil. Add urad dhal, bengal gram dhal and red chillies and fry till dhals are brown in color. Switch it off and let it cool down
Transfer it to blender / mixie and grind to slightly coarse paste with soaked tamarind (add it with water) and salt. Add Onion and grind to smooth paste
Now we are ready to temper, Add 1/2 teaspoon of oil in a pan and when it is hot add mustard seeds. Let it pop. Add Urad dhal, curry leaves. Fry till dhal is brown in colour add Grinded paste. Boil it till raw smell of onion goes off (~ 5-7 mins). Stir in between
Switch off the flame.
Now ready to be served
