Ridge Gourd sambar for idli / dosa – peerkangai sambar – simple side dish for Idli dosa

My hubby and 2nd son love sambar for idli / dosa. The other day when I went weekend grocery shopping with my mum I saw fresh and young ridge gourd and to make chutney I bought it. But couldn’t do it. When my son asked for sambar for idli my mom told me we can make it with ridge gourd. This recipe is from my mom, Can be done very fast. Kids loved it. Here you go with recipe
Ingredients:


Ridge gourd – 2 cups (diced into 1/4 cubes)
Moong dhal – 1/2 cup
Onion – 3 medium (chopped finely)
Garlic – 4 pods
Tomatoes – 1/2 (chopped roughly)
Sambar powder – 2 teaspoon
Turmeric powder – 1/4 teaspoon
Curry leaves – 10
Coriander leaves – 1 tablespoon
Mustard seeds – 1/2 teaspoon
Red chillies – 1
Oil – 1 tablespoon
Salt to taste
Coconut milk – 1/4 cup



Method:


Heat 2 teaspoon of oil. Add garlic, Onion and fry till onion is transparent. Add tomatoes and fry till mushy.

Add ridge gourd and fry for 2 mins. Add this to Moong dhal and pressure cook till 3 whistle.



when it is ready to open, open the lid add sambar powder and turmeric powder. Let it cook boil for 2-3 mins. Add coconut milk and boil for a min. 

Add rest of the oil in a pan. Add mustard seeds. Let it pop. Add curry leaves and fry for a min. Switch it off and add this to the sambar.

Serve hot

    my favorite sambhar.mostly i cook the ridge gourd in open pot and i add very little water too as it has more water content like poosanikai
