I love to have kolukattai / kozhukattai however my rest of the family likes only savoury version (kara version). I do kozhukattai for evening snacks or breakfast. It is simple to make yet very tasty. I had this one with Tomato Chutney As I wanted something spicy to go with it. But you can have it by itself. This recipe is simple for even beginners. if you are not doing it for naivedyam (to offer god) you can add onion, garlic too. Do try out and let me know.
Ingredients:
Idiyappam flour – 1 cup
Urad dal – 1/2 cup
Green chillies – 1
Curry leaves – 5-7
Asafoetida / hing – 1/8 teaspoon
oil – 2 teaspoon + 1 teaspoon
Method:
Soak Urad dal for 2-3 hrs and grind to coarse paste
Heat 2 teaspoon of oil and add mustard seeds let it pop, Add chilli, Asafoetida. Add water and salt. Let it boil
Add idiyappam flour. Mix well. Add grinded urad dhal and mix well. Cook till rice flour is cooked. Once done switch it off
When it is ok to handle knead the dough with 1 teaspoon of oil. Grease your hand and take small lemon size balls and flatten it
Arrange it in greased idli plate. steam it for 10 mins. or till kolukkattai is shinny
Remove it and enjoy!
