Thavala vadai recipe – Thavalai Vadai Recipe – Snacks recipe – Indian Snack Recipes

My mum makes vadai using Adai batter. But she just calls it as vada and does not add Sago / Javarisi. When I first heard from my friend that she made Thavalai vadai I was going What? The name really got my attention. At First I thought it was Frog vadai hehe.. Adding sago gives an unique taste to this one. It is packed with protein and perfect for tired kids after their long day in school
Ingredients

Idli rice / Par boiled rice – 1/2 cup
Urad dhal – 1/4 cup
Thoor dhal – 1/4 cup
Moong dhal – 1/4 cup
Channa dhal  – 1/4 cup
Dry Red chillies – 6-8 (adjust to your spice level)
Asafoetida – a pinch
Sago / javarisi – 1/4 cup
Coconut bits or grated coconut – 2 tablespoon
Curry leaves – 10 (finely chopped)
Coriander leaves – 1 tablespoon (finely chopped)
Salt to taste
Oil for deep frying
Onion – 1 (optional. I didn’t add)

Method:

Wash and Soak Rice and red chillies for 3-4 hours. Wash and soak all the dhals together for 3-4 hours.

Wash and Soak Sago for 2 hours. Grind the Red chillies first. Add rice and grind to fine rava consistency.

Now add all the dhals and grind to coarse paste. The batter must be thick and in Vada batter consistency.

Now add coconut gratings, chopped coriander leaves, Curry leaves, salt, asafoetida and onion if using. Mix well. Heat the oil in deep pan

When oil is hot place this batter using small spoon. Let it get cooked till brown color. Cook it in medium flame.

Turn the vada to other side to get it cooked fully.

Serve hot with your favourite chutney  / sauce / Plain will work also
