Simple Besan Flour Sambar Recipe without Onion, Garlic, and Tamarind

Looking for a straightforward and delicious recipe? Try out the Besan Flour Sambar! It’s a no onion, garlic, and tamarind recipe that pairs well with idli, dosa, and steamed rice. It’s perfect for beginners who want to start with something easy. In this variation, I’ve used Sattu flour, but the traditional recipe calls for besan flour.

If you love trying different types of sambar, especially with idli and dosa, you’ll enjoy this recipe. I learned it from my mother when I had it at her place. She mentioned that it was passed down from my cousin. She prepared it specifically for Rava idli, but I served it with regular idli and brown steamed rice. Although I enjoyed both, my sons preferred it with idli.

This sambar is quite distinct from Bombay chutney due to the generous amount of tomatoes and spices used. I’ve added my preferred vegetables, but feel free to substitute with your own choices. Give this simple recipe a try and don’t forget to share your feedback!

Notes

  1. I wanted to make this as No Onion, Garlic sambar, You can add small onion and garlic after tempering till it is transparent. and follow the rest of steps
  2. Instead of Sattu flour use Besan flour
  3. Don’t increase the besan flour it will become too thick. If it becomes thick add  hot water and boil before serving adjust salt accordingly
  4. You can use only potato in this
  5. Don’t reduce the amount of Tomatoes as this gives the sour/ tanginess to the sambar

Health benefits of Besan flour / Sattu flour

  1. Besan flour/ Sattu flour is good source of protein
  2. Sattu having low sodium content can help manage your BP and regulate the circulation in the body.
  3. Sattu is best consumed as a summer cooler as it keeps your body cool

About Besan Sambar

The benefits of besan (gramme flour) is showcased in the delicious dish known as besan sambar. It is a well-known South Indian dish that combines the tastes of veggies, lentils, and flavorful spices. This sambar is a favourite among many because of its distinctive flavour and texture.

Lentils are first cooked until they are soft and tender before being added to the Besan Sambar. After that, you sauté mustard seeds, cumin seeds, curry leaves, and other spices to make a fragrant tempering. Then you add your preferred finely chopped veggies, like carrots, beans, and drumsticks, and sauté them until they are fork-tender.

The main ingredient, besan flour, is then ready to be added. The besan gives the sambar a thick, creamy texture as well as a subtle nutty flavour. Before adding it to the sambar, you must first make a smooth paste by combining the besan and water. The dish’s distinctive flavour and consistency are both improved by this stage.

After the besan has been added, you can season the sambar to your taste with salt, turmeric, and other spices. Allow the sambar to simmer on low heat so that the flavours can blend. The end product is a flavorful and filling sambar that is ready for consumption.

Several meals match incredibly well with besan sambar. It goes well with steamed rice, savoury pancakes like dosa, and even plain idli. A delicious meal that is both nourishing and satisfying is produced by the blending of flavours and textures.

Besan Sambar is a great option whether you enjoy South Indian food or are simply seeking to try something different. It is a dish that everyone loves and can eat any time of the day due to its simplicity, adaptability, and delectable flavour.
