Horse Gram Idli – One Ingredient No Ferment Idli Recipe – Healthy Diet Recipe

Horse gramme idli is a very healthy dish that does not contain rice or dhal rice. This also does not necessitate fermentation. Horse gramme is high in fibre and is also thought to be beneficial in weight loss. My mother primarily prepares kanji / Porridge.

 

I’ve always enjoyed the nutty flavour of horse gramme, so after my marriage, I began experimenting with a variety of horse gramme recipes. Roasting imparts a distinct flavour. I posted another version of horse gramme idli with rice and urad dal. So I wanted to include this version as well. If you don’t like horse gramme but want to include it in your diet because of its nutritional value, try the other version. This recipe is ideal for those who enjoy it, are on a diet, or are diabetic and prefer low-carb options.

 

I was sceptical about the outcome the first time, but it turned out fantastic and goes well with any spicy chutney or sambar. Please try it out and provide feedback.

 

What is horse gram?

 

Horse gramme, also known as Macrotyloma uniflorum, is a type of legume indigenous to Southeast Asia.

Horse gramme is a staple in many cuisines due to its dry, hard texture and distinct flavour and aroma.

Ingredients for making Horse Gram Idli

 

  • Horse gram – 1 cup
  • Salt to taste

Step by step instruction to make Horse gram Idli

 

Step 1: Wash and soak horsegram overnight at least 7-8 hrs

 

 

Step 2: Grind it with salt. Batter would be thick

 

   

 

Step 3: Heat idli pan and oil the plate. Pour the batter (batter would be thick)

Step 4: Cook for 10 mins or till inserted stick comes out clean

 

   

 

Step 5: once done remove it from plate. Enjoy with favourite chutney

 

Notes

 

  • You can add Rice and dhal to make the idli (refer to intro section for recipe)
  • Idli cooker gives good result
  • Make sure you grind the batter thick and fluffy
  • Level it with wet spoon to get smooth looking idli

  • High in protein and fiber, both of which may support healthy blood sugar levels and decrease appetite. Hence good for healthy weight management
  • It also contains a variety of other essential vitamins and minerals, including iron, phosphorus, and vitamin C
  • Some studies indicate that horse gram may improve heart health and reduce several risk factors for heart disease.
