This is totally new to me. I have read about this in some of Tamil novels during my teenage days.By name, I thought it is made up of cashew but after I started blogging I saw this in a few blogs then I realized it is made up of green gram dal and jaggery. I love the jaggery and lentil combo (esp stuffing Seeyam, sugiyan , Kolukattai) I wanted to try this out too. I loved it. Do try out this and let me know your feedback
Ingredients:
For Stuffing
Green gram dal – 1/2 cup
Coconut – 1/2 cup
Jaggery – 1/3 cup
Cardamom – 1/4 teaspoon
Salt a pinch
For Batter:
Rice flour – 1 /3 cup
Turmeric powder – 1/4 teaspoon
Salt to taste
For Munthiri kothu
Oil for deep frying
Method:
Dry roast Green gram dal till brown in color. Let it cool down
Dry roast coconut till brown in color. Keep it aside
Grind dal and coconut separately into the coarse mixture..
Mix it with green gram mixture Heat jaggery with water (just 1/4 cup) once melted strain it. I didn’t strain it as mine there is no sand
Add green gram mixture and mix well. continue to stir till you get a thick mixture. Switch it off. Let it cool down
Make a small ball (slightly bigger than a marble) from the green gram mixture. Stick a few balls together
take rice flour, turmeric, salt in a bowl. Add water to make rice flour batter. The batter should be a little thinner than the idli batter. Dip them into the batter (the batter should be cover the balls). Heat oil for deep frying. Add dipped Kothu (balls) and cook it on medium flame till all sides are cooked
once done take it out after draining extra oil. Place it in kitchen tissue to drain extra oil.
Serve hot
