Ulavacharu Kolla Biryani – Lunch Recipe

First I heard about Charu from my colleagues I was not sure what exactly that was.. You know being food blogger sometimes people expect you to know 🙂 when I told them I am not aware of “charu” they were little surprised Then they happily explained to me that it sounded like Rasam but they said it mostly done with payaru (horse gram or green gram) I decided to try out biryani with it as my sons are not big fan of Rasam. They loved this biryani
Ingredients



Horsegram / kollu / ulavalu / Kulith – 3/4 cup
Tamarind paste – 2 teaspoon (thick paste)
Bastmati rice – 1.5 cup
Salt to taste
Curry leaves  – 10
Green chillies – 1 or 2
Mixed vegetables – 1 cup (Beans, carrot, Peas)
Turmeric powder – 1/2 teaspoon
Red chilli powder – 1 / 2 teaspoon
Garam masala – 1 teaspoon
Bayleaves – 1 or 2 
Cumin seeds – 1 teaspoon
Sesame oil – 1 tablespoon
Onion – 1 (sliced thin)
Coriander leaves – 1 tablespoon
Mint leaves – 1 teaspoon
Ginger garlic paste – 1 teaspoon



Method:


Wash and soak Kollu overnight. Once done cook it with enough water for 10 whistle. 

Let it cool down. Drain the dal and water. grind 2 tablespoon of kollu. Keep both of it aside

Wash and soak rice for 10 mins. Drain it
Heat oil. Add Bay leaves and cumin seeds. Let it crackle. Add onion fry till transparent. Add ginger garlic paste,mint leaves, green chillies. Fry till nice aroma released

Add tamarind paste, drained kollu water let it boil. Add vegetables, grinded Kollu paste and required salt. cook it for 2 mins. 

Add turmeric powder, chilli powder & gram masala. Required water, Add drained rice and adjust salt. Mix well. Close it with lid. cook till it is done.

Add coriander leaves and mix it.

Serve it!
