This dal is made with usual spices, onion and tomatoes and quite comforting recipe. You do have to soak the dal overnight. The whole cooking process takes about 30-40 mins in pressure cooker. If you make it in open pot it takes long time. Traditional one is done in Pot and slow flame.
Step 1: Heat oil. Add Cinnamon, Bayleaf, Cardamom, Star spice. Add Cumin seeds. let it crackle. Add onion and garlic, Ginger paste. Fry for a min. Add tomatoes fry for another min
Step 2: Add turmeric powder, coriander powder, garam masala, roasted cumin powder & required salt. Fry for a min. Add water. Let it boil
Step 3: Add soaked urad dal and required water. adjust Salt. Pressure cook for 8-10 whistles
Step 4: Switch it off. Let it cool down. Open the lid. Mash the dal with potato masher. Heat again add coriander leaves.
Step 6: It is ready to be served!
Notes
You can replace oil with Ghee for richer taste
Adjust the spices as per your taste
Soaking the Urad dal is a must
Also this dal can be made thick or thin depending on what you prefer.
This can be made in instant pot also. While making instant pot adjust water accordingly
