Rawa (Rava) Pongal

Pongal! I must admit that is last thing I want to have for meal. During my young days in my mother house Pongal means either ven pongal or sweet pongal. I hated it.. Everytime my mum need to do something special for me even during pongal days.. But after marriage I visited a friend just for casual lunch at her home. She did rawa / rava pongal I didn’t have a choice .. I tried it. it is not bad at all! really!. Now I can proudly say I can eat pongal but only rawa pongal 🙂

Ingredients
Rawa – 1 cup

Moong Dhal – 1/2 cupBlack Pepper – 1 teaspoon
Jeera – 1 teaspoon
Asafotida powder – a pinch
Fresh Ginger – 1 small piece (chopped finely)

Skim Milk – 1/2 CupAlmond – few
Ghee / Oil – 2 tablespoon
Curry leaves – few
Salt – 1 teaspoon or as per taste

Method:

Put rawa in a kadai and dry fry it till hot to touch. Same kadai put the dhal and fry slightly.
Coarsely powder pepper and jeera. Keep it aside
Add just enough water to the dhal and cook till it is soft. (You can also pressure cook it for two to three whistles)
Bring two cups of water and 1/2 cup of milk to boil. Add chopped ginger and salt to the boiling water. When it starts boiling, reduce the heat and add the rawa slowly and stir well. When rawa is cooked well and form a lump, add the cooked dhal mashed well. Add one or two teaspoon ghee/oil and mix it nicely.
In a kadai put the remaining oil/Ghee and when it is hot, add Almond, asafotida powder,  curry leaves and coarsely powdered pepper and jeera and fry just for a second. Add this seasoning to the rawa-dhal mixture and mix well.
